ProFarmer releases corn and soybean yield estimates
For 4 days field scouts on the 2011 ProFarmer Midwest Crop Tour pulled over 2300 corn and soybean samples and on Friday, August 26 after the numbers were compiled, ProFarmer released their yield estimates.
ProFarmer’s Chip Flory tells Brownfield that the corn yield is estimated at 147.9 bushels per acre.
“We went ahead and used the USDA’s August 1 harvested acres, that gave us a crop estimate of 12.484 billion bushels,” said Flory.
But Flory tells Brownfield ProFarmer believes that USDA will eventually have to reduce the harvested acreage number.
Taking a look at the ProFarmer soybean yield estimate.
“The official estimate from ProFarmer is 41.8 bushels per acre, that would suggest a crop of 3.083 billion bushels,” Flory said.
After travelling through 7 states on this year’s ProFarmer Midwest Crop Tour, Chip Flory says there is one area of the country where they believe there is still upside potential for the corn crop and that’s in Ohio.
“It’s a very immature crop, it’s a crop that needs a lot of extra time at the end of this growing season, it’s a crop needs to continue to get some rain if it’s going to be able to generate enough energy to put a finish on this crop with the days getting shorter,” said Flory. “There is the potential that Ohio could actually yield better to much better than what we and the market expects right now.”
