Proposed COVID-19 action plan put forth for USDA

The Chairman of the House Ag Committee and vice chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture have released a USDA “action plan” they say will safeguard America’s food supply during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The plan, released Friday by Collin Peterson and Rosa DeLauro, is supported by former USDA Ag Secretaries Tom Vilsack and Dan Glickman.

It calls for an Ad Hoc partnership with members of the food processing and distribution sectors to speed the diversion of surplus foods.

It creates an Intergovernmental Task Force to protect food, meat processing and farm workers to firm up the supply chain.

It calls on Congress to fully use all resources to assist family farmers, ranchers and grower operations affected by COVID-19.

And the plan calls for partnering with Congress to employee “innovative solutions” to use excess capacity to feed Americans.
