Prospects of year-round E15 bill in lame duck
Biofuel groups continue to push for a federal solution for year-round E15.
Iowa Renewable Fuels Association executive director Monte Shaw says he’s hopeful action will be taken during the lame duck session.
“After the election, but before the new Congress comes in in January, maybe the farm bill (gets done and) maybe year-round E15. Right now the year-round E15 bill is primarily being blocked by one Senator who chairs the committee it has to go through, and he’s using his clout as that chair to just block it.”
He tells Brownfield it appears that lawmaker is trying to appease a refiner in his district.
“But a lot of the refining industry actually wants a nationwide E15 bill to pass because then they don’t have to worry about this state-by-state approach. They don’t want a hodge podge of regulations, they want it to make sense uniformly.”
Legislation has been introduced in both the U.S. House and Senate to enable the year-round, nationwide sale of ethanol blends up to 15 percent.
