Proven crop protection

A practical farm research (PFR) agronomist with Beck’s Hybrids says long-term studies show some crop protection practices are a wise investment.

Clayton Stufflebeam, who’s based in central Illinois, says the company’s PFR Proven label is well earned.

“Any product that’s been tested in our research at multi-locations, with at least three locations in that data set, and has provided a positive yield gain and an average positive return on investment,” he says.

He tells Brownfield properly timed fungicide applications in corn are a prime example.

“With the grain markets, you’ve gotta have about a six-to-seven-bushel yield preservation with the fungicide pass for it to pay with a premium product.”  He says, “We see that an R1 application in corn to be the most profitable application.”

Stufflebeam says corn across the Midwest is quickly approaching tassel, so farmers need to scout for disease pressure and act accordingly.

“I think so far we’ve probably had the environmental component of that disease triangle.”  He says, “I’m probably laying in 65 to 75% certain that we might see one of three diseases show up with that being tar spot, northern corn leaf blight, or grey leaf spot.”
