Rain slows planting in Minnesota

Rain remains an obstacle as Minnesota farmers try to get their 2024 crop planted.

USDA’s latest weekly update says there were less than two days suitable for fieldwork last week.

Corn planting is a day ahead of the five-year average at 93 percent complete, with 74 percent emerged and 78 percent in good to excellent condition.

Soybeans are 80 percent planted, one day off the usual pace, with 49 percent emerged and 74 percent in good to excellent condition.

For small grains, spring wheat emergence is 93 percent with 80 percent of the crop in good to excellent condition.  Barley is 92 percent emerged and 81 percent good to excellent.  Oats are 89 percent emerged, with 79 percent called good to excellent.

The first cutting of alfalfa is 24 percent complete, and the hay condition rating is 71 percent good to excellent.
