Rains help Nebraska pastures, weed management key for white clover

A pasture and land management specialist with Corteva Agriscience says recent rains have helped give pastures a boost across Nebraska.
Abe Smith tells Brownfield, “We started off the season like a lot of folks a little bit drier. I think we were all stressed, but so far, we’ve seemed to have had better moisture here at the start of the summer. Hopefully those things will continue.”
He says weeds can take over a pasture if drought becomes prevalent. “We tend to get phone calls about customers worried about preserving as much grass as they can on those pastures.”
Smith says a herbicide, like Corteva’s NovaGraz, can help preserve white clover and annual lespedeza. “If you are a cattle producer you care about pounds of grass because that equates to pounds of beef, or pounds of calf, across the scale. The more we can do to promote grass production overall, NovaGraz can be a tool to help achieve that goal.”
Smith spoke to Brownfield at Corteva’s 2025 field day in Johnston, Iowa on Thursday.
