Recent snow won’t help much, Iowa farmer says

An eastern Iowa farmer says he’s concerned about a lack of soil moisture heading into the growing season.

Lance Lillibridge says precipitation deficits are adding up quickly. “We’re just going to have to pray we get moisture in the form of liquid this spring to get recharged. We are incredibly dry.”

He tells Brownfield his area has been in a snow drought this winter despite some recent accumulation. “I think we got five inches and it’s a light and fluffy snow. It’s not a super heavy and wet snow. There’s just not going to be a lot of moisture in this snow we got.”

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows more than 86% of Iowa is currently under a drought-related category.
