Record monthly red meat production in October

The USDA says commercial red meat production during October 2020 was 5.086 billion pounds, a record high for the month and up slightly from October 2019.

Beef was reported at 2.472 billion pounds, 1% higher than a year ago, with a 1% decrease in the slaughter to 2.946 million head canceled out by a 25 pound jump in the average live weight to 1,385 pounds.

Pork came out at 2.599 billion pounds, slightly lower than last year, with 2% decline in the slaughter to 12.017 million and a 6 pound gain in the average live weight at 291 pounds.

For the year to date, commercial red meat production is 46.118 billion pounds, 1% ahead of last year’s record pace.

The USDA’s cold storage numbers for October are out Monday at 3 Eastern/2 Central.
