Red meat in cold storage down, poultry up
Red meat in cold storage fell sharply during June as poultry supplies rose.
The USDA says the red meat total at the end of last month was down 14% on the year at 927.871 billion pounds with a 20% drop in beef to 411.877 million and a 9% decline for pork at 490.192 million pounds.
Beef is skewed by the record large monthly supplies at the end of June 2022, but overall, the red meat numbers reflect solid demand, along with lower monthly slaughter.
Poultry in cold storage had a 10% increase to 1.302 billion pounds, including an 11% jump in chicken to 961.433 million and a 6% gain for turkey to 437.839 million pounds with slower demand against higher year-to-year production.
The USDA’s next round of meat supply and demand numbers is out August 11th.
