Red meat production falls sharply in February

U.S. commercial red meat production dropped in February as winter weather in some areas limited movement.

The USDA says red meat production totaled 4.233 billion pounds, falling 7% from the record monthly high in February 2024 with reduced slaughter levels more than canceling out heavier live weights. In addition to the winter weather, production was cut into by there being one fewer business day in February 2025.

Beef production was 2.02 billion pounds, a decline of 15%, with the slaughter down 11% at 2.324 million head and the average live weight up 48 pounds at 1,432. Pork production was 2.2 billion pounds, a decrease of 7%, with the slaughter also 7% lower at 10.164 million head and the average live weight one pound heavier at 291.

For the year to date, U.S. commercial red meat production is 9.118 billion pounds, 2% slower than a year ago.

The USDA’s updated annual meat production projections are out April 10th.
