Regional bright spots for the cotton crop, despite a decline in the overall condition
Mississippi cotton farmer Gary Dyksterhouse says it’s been a pretty good year for cotton. “Personally, in general, I think it’s going to be a fairly solid crop,” he says. “There’s just been such variety on the weather pattern.”
He tells Brownfield with hurricane season underway, he’ll continue to track tropical storm development. “We’re looking forward to harvest to get here and for once harvest gets here for it to dry out for a little bit,” he says. “Allowing us to go and go get the crop.”
Dyksterhouse says the cotton market has struggled this year. “But you can’t be a cotton farmer and not be somewhat optimistic,” he says. “So we’re just going to maintain optimism and keep going day-to-day with the crop.” Nationally, the condition of the cotton crop dropped 4 percent, to 45 percent good to excellent.
