Rep. Feenstra says producers need crop insurance certainty

A U.S. Representative from Iowa says the ag industry deserves the certainty of a new five-year farm bill.

Republican Randy Feenstra tells Brownfield many farmers at the 2024 Farm Progress Show expressed concerns about crop insurance.

“When you’ve got corn at $3.60 and soybeans at $9.40, that’s a killer,” Feenstra said. “We’ve got to increase those reference prices and we’ve got to make sure crop insurance is there and available. We know it’s going to be used this year.”

House Ag Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson says he continues to push for new legislation rather than another extension of the 2018 Farm Bill.

“There will be another extension just because of the inactivity for the most part of the Senate,” Thompson said. “That will not be caused by the House.”

The current extension expires at the end of September.

Thompson and Feenstra spoke to Brownfield at the 2024 Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa.
