Rep. Hinson says Biden admin should help resolve port strike

U.S. Congresswoman Ashley Hinson says the port strike along the East and Gulf Coasts could have long-term impacts on the ag industry.

“I’ve heard from folks who are very concerned about a prolonged strike here,” she said. “The cost to the American economy I think I heard it’s about $5 billion per day. A two-week strike, if it lasts that long, could have significant implications all the way into next year.”

The strike began Tuesday morning after the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) couldn’t agree to a new collective bargaining agreement before September 30th.

During a press call Wednesday, the Iowa Republican said the Biden administration should step in and help resolve the issue. “President Biden is taking a back seat here instead of doing the work of the Commander in Chief to keep our supply chains running,” Hinson said.

“I hope both parties are able to come to an agreement quickly,” she continued, “that will ensure that not only are the workers fairly compensated and mitigate supply chain disruptions, but ultimately this is about also protecting our consumers from higher costs.”

The American Farm Bureau Federation recently told Brownfield port workers could slow down operations as much as a strike if forced back to work by President Biden.
