Rep. Hinson seeks House passage of Save Our Bacon Act

A lawmaker in the U.S. House says her bill would protect access to interstate commerce and help lower grocery prices.

Congresswoman Ashley Hinson says the Save Our Bacon Act was recently introduced to push back against California’s Proposition 12 law.

“They should not be able to dictate how we raise our hogs here in Iowa,” Hinson said. “They want hogs to live in Hiltons. The things our farmers do are grounded in science.”

Proposition 12 bans the sale of pork, veal, and eggs in California from animals anywhere in the country whose confinement does not meet minimum space requirements.

The Iowa Republican tells Brownfield the legislation is similar to the EATS Act from last Congress, which she co-authored.

“It respects state’s rights,” Hinson said about the updated bill. “California, if you want to regulate your producers knock yourself out. But you can’t tell Iowa hog producers what to do with their operations. We did get it included in the farm bill last Congress. It’s that same language.”

Opponents of anti-Prop 12 bills have said they could harm small farmers and would infringe on the fundamental rights of states to establish laws and regulations within their own borders.

Hinson spoke to Brownfield at the 2025 Iowa State Fair. That interview can be found below.
