Rep. Hinson seeks Prop 12 solution in 2025
U.S. Congresswoman Ashley Hinson says she hopes Congress addresses California’s Proposition 12 law sometime in 2025.
“I do believe the farm bill extension is not going to include that (Prop 12) language,” she told reporters Thursday.
Proposition 12 bans the sale of pork, veal, and eggs in California from animals anywhere in the country whose confinement does not meet minimum space requirements.
The Iowa Republican says Prop 12 has caused food prices to increase for consumers. “What we were trying to get accomplished is make sure our pork producers can do what they do best while still having access to the California market. I’m hopeful that will be in the new farm bill package next year as it’s reintroduced.”
National Pork Producers Council president Lori Stevermer recently told Brownfield Prop 12 has increased operating costs for pork producers and created future business uncertainty.
