Rep. Smith calls for additional free trade agreements

U.S. Congressman Adrian Smith says the Biden administration needs to pursue more free trade agreements.

“The fact of the matter is we have given other countries more access to our market than they have given us access to theirs.”

The Nebraska Republican tells Brownfield trade deals can help level the playing field. “The democrats are always talking about labor and environment concerns,” he said. “Trade agreements are a great way to address that. We need to be good, strong negotiators. We need to be aggressive.”

Smith says the next farm bill will be critical to improving trade promotion. “Trade promotion is a key part of the farm bill,” he said. “I really appreciate Chairman Thompson and his very aggressive posture in terms of agricultural trade and other parts of the farm bill.”

The current farm bill extension is set to expire at the end of September. The House is marking up its version of the legislation this week.
