Research shows more farmers using SCN management tools

An Ohio State Extension specialist says farmers are being more proactive in managing soybean cyst nematode.

Horacio Lopez-Nicora says recent research from the SCN Coalition shows that more than 50% of growers are soil sampling for the pest.

“Take a soil sample, know if you have soybean cyst nematode and how much you have,” he says. “You have an entire season to develop a really robust management strategy.”

He tells Brownfield there are tools to help producers decide how to manage it moving forward. 

“The SCN profit checker is a tool where a grower will input the amount of soybean cyst nematode that they detected in their field,” he says. “They can use the calculator to understand the potential yield reduction due to that level in that particular field.”

Lopez-Nicora says farmers should soil test this year if they plan to have a traditional corn and soybean crop rotation, so they have information ahead of next season.
