Rethinking land rental strategies in 2025

Farmers should rethink some strategies to improve profitability in 2025.

University of Illinois farm management specialist Gary Schnitkey says farmers should consider today’s economic conditions when making decisions about cash rents.

“In particular, renting land at high cash rents that aren’t economic right now are really questionable because we’re seeing some pretty large losses on those farms,” he says.

He tells Brownfield land-use decisions should be driven by profitability.

“Look at returns, not at yields, because getting the last couple yields out of acres can be costly and maybe aren’t the most profitable,” he says.

Schnitkey says adjusting rental agreements and practicing strategic land management could help navigate the challenging ag economy.

Brownfield interviewed Schnitkey at the 2025 Purdue Top Farmer Conference.
