RFA calls for more inclusive SAF tax credit

The Renewable Fuels Association continues to advocate for a broader suite of ag practices as the Treasury Department develops guidance for sustainable aviation fuel tax credits.

CEO Geoff Cooper tells Brownfield current requirements bundle no-till, cover crops, and efficient nitrogen fertilizer use.

“We do think there are going to be more options available to farmers to choose from, and we are also confident they are going to be unbundled. And if a farmer is doing just one practice out of a menu of five or seven, they’ll be able to claim credit for that.”

He says USDA is concluding a request for information on the new rule.

“Asking what sorts of practices should be recognized, and they got a lot of feedback from the agriculture community and from us in the biofuels space, again encouraging them to really open the toolbox and allow farmers to document the wide variety of practices they are doing on the farm to lower carbon intensity.”

Guidelines for the 45Z sustainable aviation fuel tax credit are scheduled to go into effect January 1st.
