Riding Between the Rows: Looking at Beck’s Hybrids seed corn operation

Like many farmers in the Eastern Corn Belt, Beck’s Hybrids has faced planting delays in their production seed corn operations.

Brownfield recently visited Beck’s Hybrids in Atlanta, IN for an in-depth look at their commercial seed corn production process during the first session of this year’s Ride Between the Rows.

Production location agronomist Darin Lucas says despite the rain, he’s confident in the corn they have in the ground.

“It does delay our harvest. It does delay detasseling operations,” he said. “We’ve got crews set up to come a certain date in July. We have to have that all planned out ahead of time. So it does affect some of those operations on down the road, but we can be flexible and modify it.”

He tells Brownfield the company likes to have the crop planted in a timely window.

“We can mitigate our risk by planting on the earlier side of the nick or the later side of the nick. There is a window we have, so it has to be done, has to be done on one particular day,” he said. “There is an ideal day we can plant on either side of that. So as long as we kind of have a window on either side of that, we can make it work.”

The next scheduled check-in is set for early July during the detasseling phase.
