Rise of AI could lead to additional cyber security risk for ag sector
The Federal Bureau of Investigation says a new security threat is emerging in the agriculture industry.
Special Agent in Charge Gene Kowel with the Omaha FBI Field Office says the emergence of artificial intelligence has created additional risk. “People using AI to enhance operations is a different risk than people using AI to target farmers and ranchers.”
Speaking with Brownfield during the 2025 Midwest AgTech Connect Conference, he said more producers are using precision ag technology and that’s where AI could become problematic. “Any farm equipment that we have that is connected to the cloud, which all farm equipment now a days is, has some measure of vulnerability from malware and the theft of data.”
Kowel says producers should have a cyber security response plan to protect against any kind of cyber-attack.
