Romanski: renewing USMCA is vital for Wisconsin agriculture

Wisconsin’s agriculture secretary wants to see the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement renewed. 

Randy Romanski with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection says Canada and Mexico are by far the top two markets for Wisconsin ag exports.

“It’s been a strong boost to our state’s economy (and) USMCA has opened some additional doors for us.”

He tells Brownfield Mexico has become the number one destination for Wisconsin cheese exports.

“And a big increase in recent times, so the relationship is strong and growing.”

Romanski says Canadian dairy policy has created some trade disruptions.

“What I would say to that is it’s really important for us as a state to continue that relationship that has been in place for a long time. But having that three party agreement is really important for the continuity of trade between the major trade countries of North America.”

The USMCA review is underway, and the next round of formal negotiations is set for July.
