‘Scary dry’ conditions limiting fall tillage in western Illinois

A Dekalb / Asgrow agronomist says the late-season drought continues to have an impact.

“It is scary dry.”

Lance Tarochione, who covers western Illinois, says many farmers are still waiting for rain.

“In some cases, it’s actually so dry people are not doing some tillage just because the ground is so hard and they’re wearing stuff out faster than normal, breaking more shear bolts than normal,” he says.

He tells Brownfield…

“Anhydrous seems to be going on pretty well, still sealing good and not really having any issues.”  He says, “If you did any deep tillage, I don’t think you could apply ammonia. I don’t think it would be wise to. I don’t think it would seal very good.”

Tarochione says one benefit of the drought is that many farmers have completed dry fertilizer and lime applications well ahead of schedule.
