SCN becoming more trait resistant

A technical field representative with BASF says soybean cyst nematode is becoming more resistant to current market traits.

Nick Tinsley says SCN is the largest pathogen issue in the U.S.

“Folks that grow crops on these kinds of coarser soils where it’s really sandy and you ask them about SCN and they are acutely aware of the problem,” he says. “A lot of times in those circumstances you’ll get stunted plants or yellowed plants. And it’s very easy to see what kind of damage they’re causing.”

He tells Brownfield some farmers don’t always know what to look for.

“You won’t see a lot of those above ground symptoms because you can still lose quite a bit of yield up to a third is really what they estimate,” he says. “What we’ve been trying to do is just put out as many soybean cyst nematode samples as we can encourage growers to really test their soils.”

Tinsley says the pest costs growers $1.5 billion in yield loss each year.
