SD sunflower harvest on hold for some

The general manager of a grain elevator in central South Dakota says the lack of a hard frost has delayed some progress on sunflower harvest.

Tim Luken says many stems are still too green to be harvested, but there are a few loads coming to the elevator.

“The crops we’ve received at the elevator have been in the 28 to 30 pound range, but very few loads.”

He says there are no freeze events in the forecast this week.

“It’s probably going to be one of the longer growing seasons we’ve had here compared to normal.”

Luken works with Oahe Grain Corporation in Onida, South Dakota.
