Season likely to start fast for Iowa dairy farmer

An eastern Iowa dairy farmer expects a fast start to the growing season.

Luke McDermott of Delmar says the last time he remembers a winter as warm was 2012.

“The year of the drought where we didn’t get much moisture over the wintertime, and everything was way ahead of schedule. We started our first cutting of alfalfa that on April 23rd, and this year might actually rival that.”

He tells Brownfield wheat seeded as a cover last fall could be ready to harvest by June.

“Combine that, (then) maybe get in some more beans for this year.”

McDermott says the winter was so mild he was able to till ground in January because there was no frost in the soil.
