Senate Bill 28 signed into law, provides water protections for Indiana farmers
Indiana Governor Mike Braun has signed a bill into law that will provide ground water protections for the state’s farmers and landowners.
Indiana Farm Bureau president Randy Kron says water rights was a top priority during this year’s legislative session.
“Some big water user could come in and suck all the water out quickly and there was no recourse,” he says. “We ended up with Senate Bill 28. If a farmer has an issue or if their water wells run out, they can talk to DNR. DNR has to do an investigation within three days to figure out what’s going on.”
He tells Brownfield Governor Braun is also evaluating the state’s water infrastructure.
“He actually signed an executive order to develop a statewide water plan and inventory for the state’s water resources,” he says. “We feel appreciative to the governor for being supportive.”
Kron says the organization is now focused on developing a framework for its members, so they better understand next steps.
