Senator Baldwin hopes Fertilizer Transparency Act moves quickly

Some Midwestern lawmakers have introduced legislation that would force fertilizer marketers to show what is driving prices higher.
Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin tells Brownfield the Fertilizer Transparency Act would require the fertilizer supply chain to report weekly on supplies and prices. “It would add to their knowledge about what’s happening with quantities in terms of supply as well as prices, but also, it would help push towards greater competition.”
Baldwin says the bill has bipartisan support at a time when farmers are in a crisis, so she’s optimistic the Fertilizer Transparency Act will move forward. “I’m hopeful that those forces at play will lead us to be able to consider this bill in a timely manner.”
Baldwin says ideally, the Fertilizer Transparency Act would be attached to the farm bill, but she is critical of the farm bill’s slow progress, so she’s hoping this bill can pass quickly on its own.
The House legislation has bipartisan support from Representatives Angie Craig (D-MN), Brad Finstad (R-MN), Sharice Davids (D-KS), Randy Feenstra (R-IA), Nikki Budzinski (D-IL), Zach Nunn (R-IA), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Ashley Hinson (R-IA), Josh Riley (D-NY), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), and Eric Sorensen (D-IL). Senators John Thune (R-SD), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Chuck Grassley (R-IA), joined Baldwin (D-WI) in supporting the Senate version.
As of Thursday, March 26th, the Senate bill and a House companion bill do not have bill numbers, but the proposal can be read through a link at Brownfield Ag News.
