September starts with favorable conditions

An ag meteorologist says the mixed weather forecast is favorable for crop maturity and harvest progress across the Corn Belt.

“At least through the middle of this month and possibly the latter part of the month as well.”

Drew Lerner with World Weather Incorporated says temperatures will get cooler heading into the weekend…

“We do expect high temperatures to slip into the 60s and 70s for a two to three day period as this impressive cool air mass slips down into the central parts of the Midwest, but it doesn’t last long and we should see ridge building again across the Plains.”

Lerner says there is some frost possible along the Canadian border this weekend.

“In northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, but there shouldn’t be any major crop area involved with that particular situation.”

And he says warmer temperatures will work their way through the central Corn Belt in the middle of next week.

“The Plains and Western Corn Belt will get right back into some 80s and 90 degree temperatures perhaps. The eastern part of the Corn Belt will warm back up to the 80s, for the most part. There might be a brief day or two where we could get over 90 degrees in the eastern part of the region.”

Lerner says there aren’t any big rain events expected that would setback fieldwork in any major way.
