Severe storms, heavy rain and cooler temperatures ahead
A state climatologist says summerlike weather is about to take a sharp turn.
Michigan’s Jeff Andresen says a huge hot, humid ridge over the central and eastern U.S. will collide with a Canadian cold front, creating a roller coaster of conditions.
“That air mass that’s down to the south of this system here is basically tropical, or at least semi-tropical, high dew points, lots of moisture, and that’s going to set the stage for a very, very active weather pattern here for the next several days,” he says.
He says severe storms over most of the Corn Belt could bring one to four inches of precipitation.
“Because of the way that upper air system evolves and that big trough there, we will see through the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, it’ll be much cooler,” he says. “High temperatures probably in the 70s for Saturday and Sunday, but falling even further than that.”
Andresen says conditions throughout most of June are expected to trend cooler and wetter across the region.
