Severe weather and frost threats ahead

An ag meteorologist says there’s a high risk for severe weather across the U.S. Corn Belt as the planting season continues.

Drew Lerner with World Weather Incorporated tells Brownfield “that’s the next issue – how much hail will we see and the risk of tornadoes, that kind of thing.”

He says the severe weather risk will come and go frequently in the next few weeks.

Lerner says there’s also potential for some late season frost and freezes in the Upper Midwest.

“If we end up having enough moisture around for awhile where we’re slow getting into fields, it could turn out to be a blessing when we talk about possible cold shots coming along later.”

Lerner says cold temperatures are possible in May, stretching from the eastern Dakotas into Michigan, which could damage fruit trees and early planted summer crops.
