Severe weather limits fieldwork across Iowa

Severe weather that included heavy rains limited fieldwork across Iowa last week.

USDA’s latest weekly crop report says there were less than three days suitable for fieldwork, as farmers looked for opportunities to plant corn, soybeans, and cut hay.

Corn planting is nearly 90 percent done, with 66 percent of the crop emerged.  The first corn condition rating of the season is 73 percent good to excellent.

Soybeans are 73 percent planted, ten days behind a year ago and three days behind the five-year average.  Soybean emergence is five days off last year’s pace at 42 percent.

The first cutting of alfalfa is 20 percent complete, and the hay condition rating is 78 percent good to excellent.
