Shike named interim head of Department of Animal Sciences at Illinois

The Department of Animal Sciences at the College of ACES at the University of Illinois has named its interim chair.

Professor Dan Shike will replace current head Rodney Johnson on June 16th

“Looking forward to serving the department here in this short term interim role,” he says, “and build off of the momentum, and the great things that the department has, and keep things moving in the right direction as we look for our permanent head.”

Johnson is set to become the college’s associate dean for research.

Shike, who has developed a nationally recognized research program in beef cattle management and nutrition, says he’s vested in the department.

“This fall, actually, I’ll be starting my 25th year.”  He says, “That’s counting my grad school, and I did my master’s and PhD here and then never left. So, I was in a visiting position following that and then started in a tenure track position in 2011 as an assistant professor.”

In a release, the University of Illinois says Shike’s research, teaching, and service have garnered widespread respect and recognition in the livestock industry.

A national search for a permanent head is ongoing.  Shike says the goal is to have a permanent replacement named by the end of the year.
