Shining a light on succession planning
The director of the Indiana Agricultural Law Foundation says farm succession planning needs more attention.
John Shoup tells Brownfield, “Families don’t talk about the future of the farm and the legacy they want to create for the farm.”
He says it can be as easy as having a conversation.
“Talk about it and arrange a specific time,” he says. “I think in the meantime they could assemble a team of professional advisors kind of around them that would help in this process.”
Shoup says there are resources available to help farm families, such as workshops from Indiana Farm Bureau and INAgLaw’s annual Estate & Succession Planning for the Family Farm program.
