Soil crusting causing some emergence concerns

A Midwest farmer says he’s seeing scattered soil crusting in his area causing some emergence concerns.

KJ Johnson farms in east-central Illinois.

“You can see that there are some crops that are already up and look perfect,” he said. “But if guys push the issue, yes there’s some crusting going on.”

He tells Brownfield some farmers might have ‘jumped the gun’ and started planting before fields were dry enough.

“Maybe you needed another day to dry out, but you started planting, that’s where you’re seeing some of that,” Johnson said. “I’m not saying that’s widespread, but there is some of that that guys might have pushed the issue a little bit.”

Johnson grows corn and soybeans near Champaign.
