Some tariffs on hold, but concern remains
President Trump’s proposed tariffs on Mexico and Canada are on hold, but there is still concern about what happens if the tariffs become a reality.
Mike Steenhoek with the Soy Transportation Coalition tells Brownfield when countries retaliate, farmers usually feel it first. “Agricultural products are very frequently the first item on the list that they select to impose responsive tariffs on and so that’s obviously a real concern for U.S. agricultural exports.”
Steenhoek says many producers understand why the tariffs are being considered. “Farmers that I work with, you know, they widely acknowledge that there are a number of long-standing issues between the United States and a number of these countries that do need to be resolved and need to be remedied.”
Steenhoek says the hope is that President Trump can resolve the problems without having a detrimental impact on the U.S. export program.
