Sorghum crop projection below a year ago

The USDA sees a significantly smaller sorghum crop in 2024.

Sorghum production is pegged at 278.81 million bushels, a drop of 38.935 million with a higher yield guess of 52.9 bushels per acre more than canceled out by lower planted and harvested acreage numbers at 6.3 million and 5.275 million acres, respectively.

For 2023, U.S. sorghum production was 317.745 million bushels with an average yield of 52 bushels per acre on planted area of 7.195 million acres and harvested area of 6.115 million acres.

That reduction in production pulled the new crop ending stocks estimate lower, canceling out higher beginning stocks and leading the USDA to also cut demand expectations.

The USDA’s next set of supply, demand, and production numbers is out September 12th.
