South-central Iowa rains beneficial to crop, livestock producers
A south-central Iowa farmer says the amount of rain his farm received this week was a pleasant surprise.
Steve Kuiper raises corn and soybeans in Marion County. He tells Brownfield some parts of the county had more than four inches of rain through Tuesday morning.
“We’ve got enough growth out there now that hard rains aren’t going to wash very bad,” he said. “But you’ll probably see some places that are ponded up a little bit.”
Kuiper says area livestock producers needed the moisture.
“It’s good because if we get a little runoff and a little water movement, it’s going to start filling ponds back up and greening up some of these pastures again.”
Kuiper says crop conditions have been favorable and heat stress in his corn has been minimal.
