South-central Kansas harvest could begin next week

Brownfield's Kellan Heavican interviews Kansas farmer Justin Noland.

A south-central Kansas farmer says corn harvest is right around the corner.

“Probably within the next 7-10 days.”

Justin Noland farms southwest of Wichita, and he says his crop is about two weeks ahead of the average pace. “The heat that we’ve been having has kind of pushed things along quite a bit. Generally, we’re right about Labor Day.”

He tells Brownfield despite the weather conditions, he’s optimistic. “It will make something. Obviously, it’s not going to set any records, but we have some decent looking dryland corn.”

The lates crop progress report from USDA says a quarter of the state’s crop has dented, 8 percent ahead of the average with 66 percent in the dough stage.
