South Dakota asks EPA for a one-year E15 extension

South Dakota is one of three states asking the Environmental Protection Agency for more time before it offers 15 percent gasoline blend year-round in some of the state.

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden says potential supply chain disruptions could affect a refinery in western South Dakota and he’d like to delay the implementation for 9 counties until 2026. In a letter to EPA, Rhoden also requested emergency fuel waivers to allow the year-round sale of E15 due to supply chain concerns.

“I’m hopeful that will be a short-term fix for this summer’s season and beyond that, we’re looking for a national resolution.”

Year-round E15 will be available in all other South Dakota counties year-round starting at the end of April.

Rhoden says “Generally speaking, I favor an all-of-the-above approach to energy and ethanol’s a big part of that.”

Kansas and Ohio are the two additional states asking for a one-year extension.
