South Dakota crops favorable as August begins

A crop protection specialist in South Dakota says crop conditions have been better than expected across the state.

Brad Nemmers with Bayer Crop Science says that’s despite a substantial increase in moisture compared to recent years. “We wish the water would have shut off a little bit, but turn back on throughout August. Considering the amount of moisture that we have had, the crops look very good.”

He tells Brownfield the southeast corner of the state has dealt with some challenges. “We’ve had drown outs and just quite a bit of moisture in the month of June especially. Other than that, crops look good. The wheat crop looks great.”

Nemmers says disease pressure has started to develop in some of the corn crop. He spoke to Brownfield at the 2024 Ag PhD Field Day near Sioux Falls.
