Southeast Indiana farmer getting ready for 2025 planting season

A southeast Indiana farmer says he expects his planting season to begin within the next few weeks.

Roger Wenning farms in Decatur County.

“There’s a lot of work to do,” he says. “Things are slow yet. We’ve still got manure to haul and fertilizer to spread. We’re just moving slow as usual.”

He tells Brownfield the biggest change on their operation for this year is a new planter.

“Our new planner came in late, but we are within two or three days of having it,” he says. “If the weather gets fit in next week or so, it should be ready to go.”

The USDA’s first weekly crop progress and condition report of 2025 shows Indiana’s winter wheat crop is 4 percent jointing and 68 percent good to excellent.

Topsoil moisture is 89 percent adequate to surplus and subsoil moisture is 82 percent adequate to surplus. There was one suitable day for fieldwork in the week.
