Southern Illinois wheat off to good start
A southern Illinois farmer says his winter wheat crop is off to a good start.
Jeremy Neff, who’s based in Monroe County, tells Brownfield…
“Wheat is looking very good.” He says, “We were fortunate enough to get the wheat into moisture, so we weren’t waiting on any rain for the wheat to germinate. So, our wheat is tillered real well right now. It’s looking very good.”
He says he’s thankful he made wheat planting a priority early in the fall.
“Especially with the past couple of years and this dry weather.” He says, “If we would have waited, the rains would have came later on, so they would now just be germinating from this past rain.”
Neff says his recent wheat yields have been above average, and he’s hopeful the 2025 crop continues the trend.
