Southern Illinois wheat yields up, profits down

Southern Illinois wheat farmers say 2024 was a good year in the field for most.

Eric Brammeier, who farms in Washington County, says some farmers saw near record yields.

“Excellent yields.”  He says, “Eighty-five plus, you know, some 120 yields were recorded.”

State Representative Charlie Meier, who also farms in Washington County, says he’s had bumper wheat crops the past several years.

Third year in a row, we’ve averaged over 100 bushel an acre on our wheat production, and we always raise around 500 acres of wheat,” he says.

However, he tells Brownfield prospects for wheat profitability are not good.

“A couple years ago I was selling wheat over $10 a bushel, and now it’s under $5.”  He says, “So how are you supposed to make a profit when you’re paying cash rent, and you’re paying for everything else? Our fertilizer’s not dropping, our fuel’s not dropping, our seed’s not dropping, and our interest rates are going up.”

Both farmers say the situation demonstrates the need for a strong farm safety net.  They’re optimistic their double crop soybeans planted in June will add more revenue to their wheat acres.
