Soybean aphid numbers rising in Minnesota

Soybean aphid populations are building in southern Minnesota.

University of Minnesota Extension integrated pest management specialist Bruce Potter says it’s typical this time of year.

“As soybeans get into the late R3, R4 stages, (aphid) populations tend to build up real rapidly. We believe that’s because the host quality increases, there’s a bigger canopy to help shade and support them.”

He tells Brownfield growers should be checking threshold levels.

“We’re going to see a lot of differences this year. Soybeans that have had a lot of rain on them, soybeans that have had more moderate conditions. Late-planted soybeans are going to be increasingly attractive as we get into August.”

Potter says insecticides are a tool for managing soy aphids but encourages growers to be cognizant of the latest regulations.
