Soybean harvest underway in southeast Minnesota

The soybean harvest is underway in southeast Minnesota.

Northfield farmer Bruce Peterson tells Brownfield some early maturity varieties planted the last week of April turned quickly thanks to warm and dry September weather.

“Not a lot of beans ready, touch and go if we could keep going all day today or if we’re going to kind of run out of beans that are ready. But they’ve really changed here the last few days for sure.”

He says early yields look good.

“We had some in the high 60’s to low 70’s. Seems like a lot of people think their later beans are going to be better than their early ones, but we’ve had really pretty good luck for several years now where our earliest beans are as good or better than the full season beans.”

Peterson says he expects corn yields to be down substantially compared to last year and the crop won’t be ready to harvest for at least a couple of weeks.
