Soybean yields a pleasant surprise in Northeast Nebraska as harvest delayed by rain
Northeast Nebraska farmer Anne Meis says soybean harvest has wrapped up just ahead of this week’s rainstorm.
“We’ve gotten over an inch over the night in this area. That will give everybody a break from harvesting. I think it will be fine to have a break. Th soybean fields were getting pretty dusty and we don’t want any fire hazards out there.”
She tells Brownfield she was surprised by yields. “We had some dryland beans that were in the midi 50s. Our irrigated we were looking at 70-plus bushel beans.”
Meis says the crop went into extremely dry soils, but recovered well. “We were so dry and those beans had a tough time getting going, but those timely rains that we had at the end of July and August helped them finish out and put the pods on. They were able to produce some really good yields.”
She says corn harvest will get underway once it dries out. Meis says they did take some dryland corn out earlier this month and yields were slightly above average.
