Spotted lanternfly spreads to Wayne County
New spotted lanternfly infestations have been found in Southeast Michigan.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says an extensive survey across 20 counties has found additional populations of the pest in Monroe, Wayne, and Oakland counties. It was also the first time the pest has been reported in Wayne County.
Entomologists say the invasive species could damage at least 70 different crops in the state, with grapes, hops, and apples at higher risk.
Michigan State University, Michigan’s County Cooperative Invasive Species Management Areas and the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service are monitoring over 100 points across the western and southern portions of the state.
The state is asking people if they see the pest, squash it and report it. Find out how here.
