Spring management of prevent plant acres
A record number of prevent plant acres in 2019 is resulting in a unique spring for many farmers.
University of Minnesota Extension crops educator Liz Stahl says managing those acres will depend on what occurred last year.
“A lot of the acres we were able to plant a cover crop, so then if you had an overwintering cover crop you need to be thinking about a termination plan on that. Whereas other acres people planted something like oats (and) that terminated overwinter.”
In those situations, she tells Brownfield there’s going to be more residue to deal with.
“So just be thinking about that at planting. Other acres, people just used tillage on the prevent plant acres, so there was nothing planted. Then you have to worry about fallow syndrome and the management tactics with that.”
Stahl says corn is most susceptible to fallow syndrome. To mitigate risk, she recommends banding phosphorous and zinc directly on the seed as a starter fertilizer.
