Stalk quality issues persist heading into corn harvest

An eastern Iowa farmer says silage chopping has wrapped up and he hopes to begin corn harvest heading into the weekend.

Dave Walton farms near Wilton along the Mississippi River and says, “I’ve got some corn that’s probably mid-20s. It’s pretty much time to go.”

He tells Brownfield stalk quality issues have been prevalent.

“Here at the end, it seems like doing push tests on stalks the stalks are a little bit softer than I’d like to see right now. I’m not seeing anything lodging at the moment, but the potential is there.”

Walton says soybean conditions have been favorable but he’s still several weeks out on bean harvest.
